Mudgee, Aboriginal for 'nest in the hills' and the second oldest town west of the Blue Mountains retains its old world charm. The Mudgee area was discovered by William Lawson and the village of Mudgee was gazetted in 1838, and became a municipality in 1860. Gold was discovered in the district in the 1850's and 60's and this lead to a rapid increase in population in Mudgee and the surrounding villages. |
